Weekend Activities for July 29 & 30

As we reach the middle of this week, we can’t help but start planning for the weekend! Despite the cloudy skies that plagued the start of the week, the weather forecasts are predicting that Sunday and Saturday will be bright and sunny, which is just perfect for the fun ideas we’ve come up with to help you plan an amazing weekend for you and your family.

For this Saturday, you could start the day with a nice stroll along the Beaches to end the month of July with a lot smiles under the sun. Spend some time on the lakeshore and let the kids play around in the sand while you relax and leave the worries of last week behind, if only for a moment. Afterwards, visit one of the beautiful parks that surround Queen Street East, like Ivan Forrest Gardens – a gorgeous little park that is just asking for you to have a nice family picnic while surrounded by the trees, rock gardens, and ponds that dot the greenery.

Now, if the day turns out to be as bright and sunny as we’re expecting it to be, you’ll eventually need something refreshing, so why not take the little ones to grab some ice cream? There are quite a few ice cream shops around the Beaches area, but we suggest passing by Ed’s Real Scoop, on the eastern end of Queen Street East, just north of the Balmy Beach Club, and try some of the best ice cream this side of Toronto.

The day is far from over, though, because at 7pm… that’s when the party begins! On Saturday, Queen St. East will be closed to traffic to host the Beaches Jazz Street Festival, from 7pm to 11pm.  Admittance is free, so you just have to head to Queen St. east of Woodbine Ave. and explore some of the many, many bands that will be playing on different points of the avenue. Party and have fun with the rhythms of Jazz, Soul, R&B, Afro-Cuban, and much more before heading back home for a well-deserved rest…

But the weekend is not over, is it?

On Sunday, we suggest heading west. You might’ve guessed – a trip to Mississauga is in order! Start by taking a walk around the city’s entertainment hub, Port Credit, and uncover the secrets it holds. The many parks (like Port Credit Memorial Park), restaurants (maybe you could try some traditional stone baked pizza at Amadio’s Pizza), and shops will keep you and your family entertained (and well fed!), until the main event of the day. Mississauga Celebration Centre, a 15 minutes drive from Port Credit, will be hosting the Mississauga Latin Festival!

While its origins are tied to the Colombian community, this festival has quickly grown to include acts representing other Latin American cultures from South and Central America. Starting at 2pm, the Sunday festival will present you with folklore exhibitions from Colombia and Mexico, as well as music various latin performers. Aside from music, there will be plenty of amazing traditional Colombian food. From the simple yet delicious empanadas all the way to the complex and traditional bandeja paisa, be sure to check it all out! But let’s not forget one very important thing: the Kids’ Zone, which will be filled with all kinds of fun activities for children and parents alike. In the play zone, the children will be able to enjoy fun, physical, artistic, and interactive fun activities. The entertainment will be provided by Fiesta for Kids, Kiddo Magazine, Party Kids, Mimos Kids Art, and Very Monkey.
