The summer’s last long weekend is coming up and there are lots of exciting things to do in the city, before school begins next week. So, do not despair if you haven’t made any cottage plans – we have some great ideas for you, which won’t involve spending hours on the road, stuck in traffic! Let the (last homework-free) long weekend activities in Toronto begin:

SATURDAY, September 2nd

This Saturday, we suggest you start the day at one of the city’s hidden gems, Cherry Beach

Tucked away at the bottom of Cherry Street, just south of the city’s Port Lands, this beach will provide you and your family with plenty of space to enjoy the sun and lake, without all the hustle and bustle, and a great opportunity for a little picnic on the sand. It’s right next to the Martin Goodman Trail, which is perfect for a bike ride or a long, relaxing walk, while the incredible greenery will make you feel like you’ve just ventured out of the city. Once you’ve gotten your nature doze for the day, just a short bike or bus ride from there and you’ve arrived at one of the city’s most beloved area, the Distillery District, where there’s never a dull moment. Especially not this weekend, as the Artfest Toronto Fall Fine Art and Craft Show is on. Celebrating painting, photography, sculpture, fine craft, live music and more from Canada’s top artists, the Artfest is a festival that the whole family can enjoy. There will be pottery, glass, paintings, photography, jewellery, designer clothing, wood turnings, sculpture, artisan bodycare, and plenty of gourmet food. Plus live music all along!

One of the best features of Artfest is that it loves kids! Join in creative fun with artist Sabrina Parrish as your guide. Kids can drop in anytime to experience new free art activities all weekend long from 11am-6pm. There will be painting, sand art, paper figure making and much more.

This will make for a great mix of adventure, nature and art – and what more do we want from a Saturday?!

SUNDAY, September 3rd

One of the most colourful and fun festivals of the summer is happening this weekend – The Toronto International Busker Fest. It is also the city’s biggest fundraiser for epilepsy, so by supporting it, you support a greater cause in aid of people with epilepsy and their families. Unlike previous years, this time it takes place at Woodbine Park and features a variety of acts, starting from Mur the Cosmic Cat, North Fire, the Stilt Guys, The Circus Academy, just to name a few.

There is also a large family Fun Zone that includes face-painting, balloon twisting, giant games, the TEW tent, Be A Busker Zone, Bébé Station and more! Located in the north/west corner of Woodbine Park (close to Coxwell and Eastern), the zone is guaranteed fun for the whole family!

Once you’ve seen all the acts, head to Brett’s Ice Cream for some much needed refreshments – it’s located right above the park, on Queen & Eastern and it has some of the most delicious scoops and colourful cones you have tried! While you are there, you could take a walk along Queen Street, with its many shops & restaurants or catch a movie at the local Alliance Cinemas, where kid friendly Nut Job 2 (PG), Valerian (PG-13) and Spider-Man Homecoming (PG-13) are still on.

Or take a walk on the Boardwalk, soak up the lake views, beach and sun. We won’t get much more of those as summer is coming to an end!

MONDAY, September 4th

We’ve saved the best for last – it won’t be a Toronto summer, unless you’ve visited the CNE. This weekend is the best time for it, as you’d get a fantastic view for the Air Show as well, on between noon and 3pm every day of the long weekend. As for the Ex, it’s hard to know what to start with – the thrilling rides, the awesome games, the delicious food, the Arts, Crafts and Hobbies Pavilion – just to name a few.

There is a whole World Stage dedicated to the kiddies, with performers such as Paw Patrol, Dora the Explorer, Robin Hood, Barney and many more. If you are attending the CNE with small children, worry not – there is a special ride area designed especially for little ones. The Kiddie Midway is situated just east of Kids’ World at the west end of the CNE grounds and features 30 wonderful and whimsical rides just for the little ones!

Take the Sky Ride across the whole EX and check out the grounds from above. Win a minion at a Water Gun game. Check out a Mighty Mike Show. Eat a deep fried Mars bar. The opportunities are endless! The whole family will have so much fun, no one will want this day to end! By the time you get home, you will have ended the summer on a bang and back to school will seem like a breeze!

Happy weekending and a wonderful back to school to all the students!
